3D Printing vs Injection Molding: Which Is Cheaper for Your Production Run?
Choosing between 3D printing vs injection molding is the biggest cost decision when you make a plastic product. Get it wrong and you either pay for an expensive mold on an unproven design, or pay too much per unit at scale. Here is how to decide.
The basic difference
Injection molding forces molten plastic into a metal mold. The mold is costly and takes weeks to make, but once it exists each unit takes seconds and costs very little.
3D printing builds parts layer by layer straight from a digital file. There is no mold and no large up-front cost, but each unit needs its own print time, so unit cost stays roughly flat at any quantity.
When 3D printing saves money
• Low to medium volumes. Tens to hundreds of units are usually cheaper to print, because there is no tooling cost to spread.
• A design that is still changing. Editing a file is free; editing a steel mold is not.
• Speed. First parts in days rather than weeks. [CONFIRM: prototype turnaround]
• Complex or personalised parts. Internal cavities, per-unit variations and individual names are straightforward.
When injection molding makes more sense
• High volumes. From thousands of units upward, tooling cost spreads thin and unit price drops sharply.
• A smooth finish straight off the tool.
• Specific engineering plastics, where the material range is wider.
The break-even point differs for every part, depending on size, complexity and material. It usually lands somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand units.
The best strategy: use both
Many brands use 3D printing for rapid prototyping and small market tests, then move to injection molding once the design is final and demand is proven. That avoids paying for a mold you later have to change.
Frequently asked questions
Are 3D printed parts as strong as injection molded ones? For many uses, strong enough. Printed parts can be weaker between layers, so print orientation and material are chosen to match the load.
How much does an injection mold cost? It depends on size, cavity count and mold material. Get a toolmaker's quote and compare it with a 3D printing cost estimate.
Can I order small production runs near Jakarta? Yes. Make Matters in Tangerang prints small batches for businesses.
