What Is 3D Printing, and When Does Your Business Need It?

A quick guide for those who wonder

What is 3D printing?

In short, it makes physical objects directly from a digital file by building up material layer by layer. It used to be limited to large factories and labs. Today, small and medium businesses in Indonesia use it for prototypes, merchandise, displays and custom products.
How 3D printing works

  1. Digital design. The object is created as a 3D model.
  2. Slicing. Software cuts the model into hundreds of thin layers and plans the print path.
  3. Printing. The machine builds the object layer by layer, bottom to top.
  4. Finishing. Supports are removed; the part can then be sanded, painted or assembled.

The two most common technologies for business are FDM (melted plastic filament, good for functional, medium-sized parts) and resin (liquid cured by light, good for very fine detail).

When 3D printing fits your business

• Small to medium quantities, from one to hundreds of units.
• Custom or personalised products, such as a different name on every unit.
• Designs still evolving that need testing.
• Complex shapes that are hard or costly to make other ways.
• Speed, with no wait for a mold.

When another method is better

For tens of thousands of identical units, injection molding is usually cheaper per part. For very large objects, CNC or fabrication may be more efficient. See the comparison in 3D printing vs injection molding.
How Indonesian businesses use it
• Brands make event merchandise in the shape of their own mascot.
• Coffee shops make barista tools and menu displays sized to their bar.
• Startups test product prototypes before ordering from a factory.
• Universities make teaching models and research parts.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3D printing expensive? For small quantities it is often cheaper than other methods, because there is no mold. Cost depends on size, material and finishing.
Are 3D printed parts strong? With the right material and design, strong enough for daily use. Strength depends on material, infill and print orientation.
Where can I find 3D printing near Jakarta? Make Matters is based in Tangerang and serves businesses across Greater Jakarta.
